DMC’s World DJ
Championships has grown through the years
and the formats of the competitions have developed along with the demands.
Originally meant to be a DJ mixing battle, DJ Cheese in 1986,
introduced scratching in his routine, changing the course of the DMC battles
forever. The prestigious DMC World Champion
title has been the most sought after by aspiring DJs / turntablists
worldwide!
The only equipment permitted
in the DMC DJ Championships are two Technics turntables, an audio mixer
(with no effect) and Ortofon cartridges. No other equipment is
allowed. The DJs are allowed a period of exactly six (6) minutes to impress
the judges. The same rules are applied to all competitions
around the world.
It is the
inspirational performances of the world champions that will go down in the
history books and will always be remembered – DJ Cheese (USA ‘86),
Chad Jackson (UK ’87), Cash Money (USA ’88), Cutmaster Swift
(UK ’89), DJ David (Germany ’90 & ’91), The Rock Steady DJs
(DJs Q-Bert, Mixmaster Mike & Apollo (USA ’92) Mixmaster Mike & Q-Bert
as The Dream Team ’93/4), Roc Raider (USA ’95) and DJ Noize
(Denmark ’96). In 1997 Canada’s own champ, fifteen year old DJ A-Trak
stunned the world by winning first place and the coveted gold turntables in
Rimini, Italy.
For the following three years DJ Craze from Miami, USA was
the World Champion. In 2001 the Championship was won by Plus-One from
the UK and in 2002 Japan's DJ Kentaro took home the gold. 2003 saw
the gold turntables once again traveling to Canada when Toronto homeboy
DJ Dopey won the World Championship title. In 2004 the gold went to
ie.MERGE, another great
American champ who came back to defend his title in 2005 and took home the
gold for a second time in a row. In 2006 Netik from France was
crowned the DMC World Champion. The 2007 DMC World Championship title went
to Germany's Rafik.
Through the years Canada has been well represented at the
World DJ Championships
with
DJ Jam On Strong from
Toronto back in 1989,
Ottawa’s
Kingswift & Ground Control
in 1992, in 1996
by Toronto Turnstylez Crew member
D-Scratch
and
in 1997 by Montreal’s A-Trak, who was the first
Canadian DJ to return to Canada a World Champion. Since then in 1998
Lil’ Jaz of Toronto, in 1999 DJ Wax of Vancouver, in 2000
DJ Pump from Calgary, in 2001 Canadian Champion Jr-Flo
from Toronto have all placed in the top ten at the World Finals.
DJ
Dopey
did an outstanding job representing Canada at the 2002 World Final by coming
home with 3rd Place and in 2003 he won it all becoming Canada’s second World
Champion. In 2004 DMC Canada had Winnipeg’s Brace on stage
representing as Canada’s new Champion as well as DJ Dopey, our Canadian
defending World Champion. In 2005 Ottawa native Drastik and
2006 Canadian Champ Wundrkut both did Canada proud by placing in the top 10 World finalists.
DJ Shub the 2007 DMC Canada Champ will be represented Canada at the
2007 DMC World Finals in London, England.
Many great DJs have
taken part in the DMC DJ Championships over the years. U.S. DJs
include Babu (Dilated Peoples), Beck's DJ Swamp, DJ
Rectangle, Bad Boy Bill… Some of the UK top entries to the DJ
competition have included Carl Cox, Tony De Vit, as well as,
Tony Vegas, Prime Cuts and Plus-One from the Scratch
Perverts crew. The Italians will point to their top DJ producers such as
Zappala, Claudio Coccoluto and DJ Professor who all
made their mark in the DMCs. Sweden had Rob'n'Raz, Australia had
Avalanche's DJ Dexta, Denmark had
Cutfather and we in Canada had Nick Holder back in 1989 and the
Ninja Tune wonder Kid Koala, who won the Montreal Elimination back in
1996.
